Kidney disorders
The St Vincent’s nephrology department provides a comprehensive and multidisciplinary inpatient and outpatient consulting services (including general nephrology, transplant, dialysis, renal supportive care). This includes managing a range of renal disorders:
- Acute Kidney Injury
- Management of Chronic Kidney Disease
- Electrolyte imbalance
- Immune Glomerular Disease
- Hypertension
- Nephrolithiasis
- Haemodialysis (home, in-centre, satellite) and Peritoneal Dialysis
- Renal transplantation – including combined heart kidney transplantation
The team comprises renal physicians, nurse practitioners, specialist nurses, transplant and vascular access surgeons, palliative care physicians, social workers and dieticians.
The renal department is located in the Xavier Building, Level 4, Renal Ambulatory Care. The Renal Ambulatory Care is a purpose-built facility and provides a full complement of services, including:
- Haemodialysis services (11 acute dialysis and 17 out-patient dialysis spaces)
- Peritoneal dialysis services including home training and in-patient management
- Outpatient clinics:
- General nephrology and dialysis
- Transplant (pre-transplant assessment and coordination, post-transplant care)
- Renal supportive care clinics
St Vincent’s is a teaching hospital, and the department is active in clinical research. The Renal Resource Centre provides an optimal environment for collaborative research. Our key areas of interest include outcomes for kidney and combined solid organ transplant recipients, clinical trials in kidney transplantation, and hypertension. Many of our staff hold academic appointments at the Universities of New South Wales and Notre Dame.
