New Clinical Research role to Drive Heart Lung Research at St Vincent’s

St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney has today announced the appointment of distinguished cardiologist, Associate Professor Clare Arnott as the inaugural Pagent Family Director of Clinical Research –  Heart-Lung. The newly created role will expedite advancements across the Heart-Lung Clinical Stream in clinical trials research focussing on mechanical heart, minimally invasive valve trials, organ perfusion and transplant and cardiac imaging.  

A/Prof Arnott joins St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney from the George Institute of Global Health where she is the Head of the Cardiovascular Program, and Director of the Global Better Treatments Program and Staff Specialist Cardiologist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. 

A position made possible by the generous visionary gift from the Pagent family, this transformative donation will enable the Heart-Lung team to continue to lead clinical innovations in the important interaction between heart and lung health for improved health outcomes.

“We are thrilled to welcome A/Prof Arnott to the team,” said Prof Michael Feneley AM, Director of the Heart-Lung Program and Cardiology at St Vincent’s Hospital. “Her research has significantly contributed to advancements in cardio-kidney metabolic medicine and women’s heart health. A/Prof Arnott’s pioneering work closely aligns with our mission to provide cutting-edge care and research and to extend the reach of current research programs to new areas across heart-lung diagnosis, prevention, treatment and care.

“A/Prof Arnott’s expertise and visionary approach will be instrumental in advancing our Heart-Lung program. It will contribute to positioning the St Vincent’s Health Precinct Sydney as the home of high impact cardiovascular research to achieve international accreditation of our Heart-Lung program as a Centre of Excellence,” he said.  

“I am exceptionally excited to join the St Vincent’s team, with whom I share many of my core values around equity, diversity, inclusion and service to the community,” said A/Prof Arnott. “I am greatly looking forward to the challenge of working with world leading clinicians and researchers across the broader campus to further develop this Program of Heart-Lung Research. It is a privilege to take this role and I am so very grateful to the Pagent Family for their remarkable donation.”

As part of her role at St Vincent’s, A/Prof Arnott will hold a conjoint appointment with the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute and the St Vincent’s Centre for Applied Medical Research.

In 2024, St Vincent’s Transplantation celebrates its 40th anniversary, marking the successful heart transplant of 14 year old Fiona Coote by renowned cardiologist Dr Victor Chang AC in 1984, also made possible by philanthropic funding.
