St Vincent’s Public Hospital
St Vincent’s Public Hospital is a renowned acute public teaching and referral hospital located in Darlinghurst, Sydney. Founded in 1857 by the Sisters of Charity, the hospital has a long-standing reputation for providing excellent clinical training and research opportunities for basic physician trainees. The campus is also home to The Garvan Institute of Medical Research, The Kinghorn Cancer Centre, The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, The St Vincent’s Centre for Applied Medical Research and The Cunningham Centre for Palliative Care.
The physician specialties present at St Vincent’s Hospital provide many unparalleled training opportunities for Basic Physician Trainees. Located within the hospital are many specialty units that are internationally recognised as centres of excellence (e.g. heart and lung transplantation, bone marrow transplantation, cancer care, and AIDS/HIV, to name a few). Basic Physician Trainees have the opportunity to rotate through terms such as cardiology, respiratory medicine, haematology, medical oncology, infectious diseases and immunology, neurology, gastroenterology, aged care medicine, endocrinology, vascular medicine, palliative care and drug and alcohol. On-the-job learning is supported by high quality supervision from ward consultants, formal education initiatives, such as lectures and online learning, as well as mentoring.
Campbelltown Hospital
Campbelltown Hospital is a 450-bed hospital with a busy ED seeing over 65,000 presentations a year. Camden hospital is a sister facility with an emergency department, rehabilitation unit and palliative care unit. It has recently undergone a major redevelopment to provide new facilities and an expanded array of services in one of the fastest growing areas of Sydney. The hospital sees a wide range of clinical presentations and offers specialty experience for St Vincents networks trainees with rotations in cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, geriatrics, oncology, neurology, respiratory and general medicine.
Campbelltown hospital is staffed by a broad array of very experienced physicians and places a heavy emphasis on the importance of teaching as part of training. Every year we deliver a written lecture series, specialty masterclasses, a trial examination and one on one mentoring for short and long case preparation for the DCE. Beyond the clinical and teaching opportunities we aim to maintain a culture that fosters care and support of all trainees as you progress through training.
Wagga Wagga
Wagga Wagga is the regional hub for one of the largest health districts in Australia. Working with the UNSW and Notre Dame Clinical schools, it has leading clinicians in respiratory medicine, cardiology, neurology, gastroenterology, renal, infectious disease and geriatric medicine. As a regional hub, basic physician trainees will work with excellent advanced trainees in a range of specialty fields. The JMO culture has been the highest ranked in NSW for training and teaching culture for the last decade. Working with the best, highly motivated JMOs makes being a registrar a lot more rewarding.
