Respiratory Medicine

St Vincent's Hospital's Department of Thoracic Medicine has performed 910 lung and heart/lung transplants since 1989 and is now performing about 60 transplants each year. The Department provides inpatient and outpatient care for a wide range of respiratory conditions including:

• Asthma and allergy
• Pulmonary fibrosis
• Sleep disordered breathing
• Respiratory failure
• Lung transplantation
• Tuberculosis
• Dust diseases
• Chronic air flow limitation
• Lung cancer
• Pulmonary Hypertension

The Department provides a state-wide interventional bronchoscopy service which includes laser bronchoscopy, endobronchial stenting with dilatation and Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) diagnostics.

The St Vincent's Hospital Heart Lung Clinic cares for patients with:

• Heart failure
• Lung diseases
• Pulmonary hypertension
• Patients who require or have had a heart and/or lung transplant

Comprehensive lung function testing, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, asthma provocation testing and measurement of exhaled breath condensate are performed in the Lung Function Laboratory.

Research and the development of new treatments is a core focus of the Department and includes investigator driven trials in immunosuppression after lung transplantation, pulmonary fibrosis and Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) and Pulmonary Hypertension.
