Clinical Genomics Unit

The Clinical Genomics Unit (CGU) use cutting-edge genomic testing technology to facilitate personalised medicine in order to improve patients' clinical outcomes.

The service is one of the few in the world that provides genomic testing as a diagnostic tool in mainstream clinical care. The unique feature of CGU is that we work closely with the genomic laboratory staff at Genome. One , the world-class genomic testing facility based at the Garvan and that recently acquired NATA accreditation. The integration between clinical (CGU) and laboratory (Genome. One) service is the key to enhancing the genomic diagnostic success.

The CGU offers a comprehensive range of genomic and genetic services for individuals and their families with a suspected heritable condition. Our services include: genetic risk assessment, genetic diagnosis, pre-test and post-test counselling, result interpretation, and consultative advice on management of patients and their families with genetic disorders. We also offer psychosocial support to individuals and families who have concerns about their genetic diagnosis.

Referral Base: Adult patients aged 18 years or over, with a suspected genetic diagnosis that is non-cancer related. For cancer genetic syndromes please direct referrals to the Familial Cancer Clinic at The Kinghorn Cancer Centre.

Being part of the tertiary referral centre, we are at present only accepting referrals from Specialists (either within or external to St Vincent’s) and unfortunately do not yet accept referrals from GPs (with the exception – when a genetic diagnosis is already made and known in the family – please enquire if uncertain).

For referrals to CGU, please fax or email the completed referral form
